Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary Tour

Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve dedicated to the conservation and reintroduction of rhinoceroses.

The sanctuary is situated near the Nakitoma Village in the Nakasongola District, about 170 kilometres (approximately 2.5 hours’ drive) north of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. It covers approximately 70 square kilometres (7,000 hectares) of land.

The sanctuary plays a crucial role in rhino conservation by protecting and breeding the animals, involving local communities in conservation efforts, and providing conservation education. Its primary objective is to breed Southern White Rhinoceroses and to eventually reintroduce them into Uganda’s national parks.

Uganda’s wild rhinos became extinct in the early 1980s after human encroachment, poaching, and conflict wiped them out. However, 20 years later, in 2005, six rhinos were reintroduced to Uganda at Ziwa Rhino Reserve. There are now over 40 southern white rhinos.

Zziwa Rhono Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can currently see rhinos in the wild.

Apart from rhinos, the sanctuary is home to a variety of other wildlife including Uganda kobs, bushbucks, oribis, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 300 bird species.

Visitors can engage in guided rhino tracking on foot, which is a unique experience. There are also opportunities for bird watching, nature walks, and other wildlife
