The Bahai Temple
The Mother Temple of Africa is located on Kikaaya Hill, 4 miles from Kampala along Gayaza Road.
Its architecture combines traditional, spiritual, and artistic elements.
Designed like a traditional African house, Africa’s lone temple is the only one in Africa. The dome-like shape represents paradise on earth as a symbol of the holy circle and sacred bounds.
At its construction, it was the highest building in East Africa at about 38 meters (125 ft).
To withstand the seasonal winds and heavy rains, it includes a circular covered porch on the lowest level of the building
Gaddaffi Mosque
A Kampala tour is not complete without a trip to the Uganda National Mosque. Originally called the Gaddafi National Mosque, this Mosque is the biggest in East Africa and one of the biggest in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is located on the top of Old Kampala Hill, one of the seven most distinct of the 23 hills that make up Kampala. The Colorful structure with its magnificent features of Art was built and designed based on a mixture of Cultures of Arab, European, and African Touch. It’s a two-story building, with the mosque on the upper floor and the offices on the ground floor. The mosque offers religious artistry, beautiful Islamic embroidery on the inside of the dome and wonderful architectural elements that pay tribute to a great deity. It also has a minaret (prayer tower) rivalling the typical Ugandan ‘sky-scraper’ that offers breathtaking city-wide views.
Kabaka's Palace
“Kabaka” means King. This is the palace of the biggest Kingdom in Uganda, the Buganda Kingdom. Learn about its rich history and culture. The kingdom played a big role during colonial times and Uganda`s road to independence. Located in the Palace are the Idi Amin Torture chambers. They were built by the Israelites, initially as a place of armoury. Idi Amin the president at the time turned it into a torture chamber.
It comprised five cells and a dark tunnel with an electric door at the entrance, separated by an electric pool of water in the corridors. Whoever tried to escape from the room would be shocked by the electricity.
Kasubi Tombs
The Kasubi Tombs in Kampala, Uganda, is the site of the burial grounds for four kabakas (kings of Buganda) and other members of the Baganda royal family.
As a result, the site remains an important spiritual and political site for the Ganda people, as well as an important example of traditional architecture.
It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2001 when it was described as “one of the most remarkable buildings using purely vegetal materials in the entire region of sub-Saharan Africa”
