4. Namugongo Catholic Martyrs Shrine – A Monument of Sacrifice

This iconic basilica was built at the exact site where St. Charles Lwanga and his companions were martyred. The hut-shaped structure, supported by 22 pillars (each representing a martyr), stands over a sacred altar marking the execution spot. Declared a basilica in 1993, it features a man-madelake, pilgrimage paths, and prayer gardens. Each year on June 3rd, millions gather here for Martyrs Day, making it one of Africa’s most significant Christian pilgrimage sites.

5. Namugongo Anglican Martyrs Shrine – Faith Preserved

Just steps from the Catholic site, this shrine honours the 23 Anglican martyrsexecuted during the same persecution. It features a modern amphitheatre seating up to 20,000, a museum detailing the lives and legacy of the martyrs, and sacred springs where executioners once washed their weapons. The site reflects deep reverence, ecumenical unity, and the resilience of early Ugandan Christians.
