3-Day Gorilla Trekking Experience at Bwindi Impenetrable
The mountain gorilla is one of the two subgroups of the Eastern Gorilla, the other being the Eastern lowland gorilla. The Eastern Gorilla is the largest living primate and a critically endangered species. At present, there are slightly over 1000 mountain Gorillas. Uganda has more than half of the world`s mountain Gorillas. These are found on the Virunga Mountain slopes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Located in South Western Uganda.
The mountain Gorilla is highly social and lives in a relatively stable family group comprising an average of 10 individuals. The group is held together by long-term bonds between adult males and females. 61% of the groups comprise one adult male and several females; 36% contain more than one adult male. The remaining gorillas are either lone males or exclusively male groups, usually made of one mature male and a few younger males.
The 3 days Uganda gorilla safari is an exciting wildlife adventure that takes you to Bwindi’s Impenetrable forest, one of the most ancient rain forests in Africa.
Itinerary Details
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Begin your safari adventure early with a pick-up and briefing from your driver/guide at your accommodation. Your first stop is the Uganda Equator at Kayabwe, where you can straddle the northern and southern hemispheres and capture iconic photos. Continue to Lukaya Market, renowned for its roasted meats, plantains, and local delicacies.
Take another stopover at Mbarara for lunch and a visit to Igongo Cultural Center, which gives you a chance to explore the interesting Ankole museum. At this cultural site learn more about the Bahima as well as Ankole cultures inUganda. Proceed to Bwindi National Park, arriving in the evening, and check in at your booked accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After Breakfast, join your guide for a transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing about the trekking exercise. Here, you are given a briefing about what is expected while trekking. Once you locate a gorilla family, you will stay with it as you observe their behaviours and take photos with them.
It is paramount to note that the trekking exercise can last several hours – this depends on the location of the gorilla family on that day. After the trekking adventure, you are given a certificate of participation, and your guide transfers you back to the lodge.
Day 3: Visit to the Batwa community and transfer back to Kampala
Early in the morning, after Breakfast, you will visit the Batwa community for a cultural encounter with the Pygmies- The shortest people in the World. Learn about their rich history and experiences. After this, you will start your journey back to Kampala.
